Self-reproduction machine

Japanese: 自己増殖機械 - じこぞうしょくきかい（英語表記）self‐reproduction machine

The greatest characteristic of living things and life is reproduction. Reproduction is when an individual organism produces other organisms that have the same structure and properties as itself. Because reproduction involves the element of increase, it is also called self-reproduction. On the other hand, machines are created by humans and generally manufacture things (including machines) that are different from themselves. Normally, it was thought that manufacturing machines are more complex than the products they manufacture, and that they cannot manufacture things that are the same or more complex than themselves. For example, a copy machine uses an original and a machine to produce many copies that are identical to the original.

生物や生命の最大の特徴は生殖である。生殖とは生物個体が自分と同じ構造や性質を持った生物個体をつくり出すことである。生殖には増えるという要素が入るから自己増殖ともいう。他方，機械は人間がつくり出したもので，一般に自分自身とは異なるもの(機械を含む)を製造する。通常，製造機械は被製造物よりも複雑であり，自分自身と同じか，より複雑なものを製造することはできないと考えられていた。例えばコピー機は原稿と機械によって原稿と同等のコピーを多数つくり出す。
