…A tool used to shave and finish the surface of wood, with a shallow triangular blade resembling the tip of a spear attached to a wooden handle. Until the appearance of the modern-day dai-ganna (base plane) at the end of the 16th century, it was simply called kanna or kana, but after that it came to be called yari-ganna. The Wamyōshō states that “the kana is used to shave the height and depth of the blade marks of the chiyo (adze),” and it is assumed that it was mainly used to shave large timber for construction. …
