Sankara, T. (English spelling)

The country was formerly known as Upper Volta. In August 1984, Thomas Sankara (1947-1987), who took power in a military coup in August 1983, renamed the country Burkina Faso (meaning "the noble community").

The country is situated on sparsely wooded tropical grassland savannah with a long dry season (September–April) and a short rainy season (May–August).
