In 1892, the company established a coke plant at the Miike coal mine, and in 1941 it became independent as Mitsui Chemical Industries. It produced dyes, synthetic resins, etc., and merged with Miike Synthetic Industries in 1962. In 1933, Toyo Koatsu Kogyo was established as part of the Miike coal combinat. It developed mainly with chemical fertilizers. In October 1968, the two companies merged with the aim of becoming a comprehensive chemical industry company and making a full-scale entry into petrochemicals. In October 1997, it merged with Mitsui Petrochemical Industries to become Mitsui Chemicals. →Chemical industry

1892年三池炭鉱にコークス工場を設け，1941年三井化学工業として独立。染料，合成樹脂などを生産し，1962年三池合成工業を合併した。また1933年三池の石炭コンビナートの一環として東洋高圧工業設立。化学肥料中心で発展した。1968年10月この両社が総合化学工業企業化と石油化学への本格進出を企図して合併した。1997年10月，三井石油化学工業と合併し，三井化学となった。→化学工業
