In 1892, the company established a coke plant at the Miike coal mine, and in 1941 it became independent as Mitsui Chemical Industries. It produced dyes, synthetic resins, etc., and merged with Miike Synthetic Industries in 1962. In 1933, Toyo Koatsu Kogyo was established as part of the Miike coal combinat. It developed mainly with chemical fertilizers. In October 1968, the two companies merged with the aim of becoming a comprehensive chemical industry company and making a full-scale entry into petrochemicals.
