Vestmannaeyjar (English spelling)

Japanese: ベストマンナ[諸島]（英語表記）Vestmannaeyjar

A volcanic archipelago located 7-30 km south of Iceland. Total population 4,900 (1991). It consists of 16 islands and reefs, with Surtsey, which was formed by an underwater eruption in November 1963, being the southwesternmost island. The largest and most inhabited island is Heimaey, and the fishing center Vestmannaeyjar is located in the northeast. Before the eruption in January 1973, the number of people was much higher, almost the entire population of 5,300, who temporarily evacuated to the mainland. Those who remained used seawater pumps to solidify the approaching lava, saving the port and fish processing plants.

アイスランド南方の7～30km沖にある火山性群島。総人口4900(1991)。16の島と岩礁から成り，1963年11月に海中噴火で生じたスルスエイSurtsey島は最南西端。最大･有住の島はヘイマエイHeimaey島(家島)で，北東部に漁業中心地ベストマンナエイヤルがある。73年1月の噴火前にはもっと多く，ほぼ全部の5300人が一時本土に避難した。残った人は迫る溶岩を海水ポンプで固まらせ，港や魚加工工場を救った。
