In this system, voters simply elect the election committee (interim electors), who then elect the candidates. Indirect elections are different from direct elections, in that voters themselves elect the candidates, and instead only indirectly participate in the selection of the candidates through the election committee. In the 19th century, indirect elections were widely used to elect members of parliament in continental Europe, but now direct elections are the basic principle of the electoral system. However, even today, the US presidential election and the election of senators in France and the Netherlands are indirect elections. There is a system similar to indirect elections, but it is different from it, the multiple election system (semi-indirect election system). The difference between the two is that in indirect elections, the intermediate electors are chosen only to elect the candidates, and their position disappears when the election is over, but this is not the case in the multiple election system. In the past, prefectural assembly members in Japan were elected by multiple elections, i.e., in city and county assemblies (1890-99).
