Year of death: Ōan 2/Shohei 24.6.27 (1369.7.31) Year of birth: 1298 A Nichiren sect monk from the late Kamakura period to the Northern and Southern Courts period. He went by the name Myoryuin. Legend has it that his father was from the Uesugi clan and his mother from the Ashikaga clan, and that he was the uncle of Ashikaga Takauji, but this is doubtful. He studied under Maka Ippo Nichiin, and was given the throne of Kamakura Honsho-ji and Echigo Honjo-ji, but in 1338 he was invited by Nichiin's disciple Nichiyu to go to Kyoto, and with the patronage of the Ashikaga clan, he moved Honsho-ji to Rokujo Horikawa and named it Honkoku-ji (later Honkoku-ji). While Nichizo, the pioneer of Kyoto's propagation of Buddhism, was based at Myoken-ji, Nissei carried out his missionary activities from Honkoku-ji. This is why he is said to be the founder of the Rokujo school along with the founding of Kyoto's Honkoku-ji. His disciples included Kentei-in Nichiden and Enkobo Nichijin. <References>Complete History of the Nichiren Sect, Vol. 1, edited by the Nichiren Teaching Research Institute of Rissho University (Kaoru Sasaki) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
