American violinist and conductor. Born in New York. He studied under Louis Persinger, and attracted attention in 1924 when he performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has been hailed as a "child prodigy." After his debut in Paris in 1927, he studied under the famous Romanian violinist Enesco there. He began his full-fledged performance career in 1929. After the Second World War, he temporarily fell into a technical slump, but he continued to work in a wide range of fields, including hosting the Bath Festival, the Windsor Festival, and the Menuhin Festival, and also trying his hand at conducting. His spiritual depth and strength led him to return to solo performance. He left the United States in 1959 and made London his base of operations. He obtained British citizenship in 1985. Since his first visit to Japan in 1951, he has visited the country several times.
