The largest tank battle in history took place in July 1943 near Kursk in the center of the German-Soviet front. The two sides combined had 13,200 tanks, 11,950 planes, 69,100 artillery pieces, and 4.15 million men. The Americans and British treated it relatively lightly, but the Soviets considered this battle to have decided the fate of World War II. In response to the Soviet salient near Kursk, which had been created by the overall war situation, the Germans tried to squeeze out the base of the salient from the north and south, encircling and destroying the Soviet forces there.
