Born on April 2, 1897. After working as a clerk at a bookstore in Okayama City, he joined Osaka Kenbunkan. At the age of 18, he became the head of the Tokyo branch office. In 1922, he founded Shogakukan, believing that "the foundation of Japanese culture lies in elementary school education." He published educational magazines for each grade level and achieved success.
