…In the Song dynasty, they were called 'tōbō' (a residence), 'tōbō' (a storage facility), 'tai-tōjiō' (a storage facility), etc., and in the Ming dynasty, the term 'tōbō' was used, but in the Qing dynasty, they were called 'gyōdō' (a storage facility), 'gyōzan' (a storage facility), 'tai-zan' (a storage facility), etc. Warehouses were sometimes operated jointly by inns, and in the Tang dynasty, their managers were called 'jūten-shujin' (a storage facility owner), or simply 'shujin' (a storage facility owner), and they not only kept the goods, but also sold them under their own name on behalf of the shippers, and sometimes even purchased the goods themselves.
