This medicine was practiced in the 7th century when Islam emerged and a vast Islamic cultural sphere was formed. Its origins lie in ancient Greek and Roman medicine, to which medical knowledge from India and China was added, and new methods such as alchemy were also developed independently, forming Arabic medicine with a wealth of medicinal knowledge. The rise of the Salerno Medical School at the end of the 11th century paved the way for the fusion of Arabic medicine with Western Christian medicine, and ancient Greek medical texts that had been translated into Arabic were retranslated into Latin there, which had a great influence on the subsequent development of medicine in Europe. Today, Arabic medicine is recognized for its originality, but is more highly regarded for having passed on ancient Greek medicine to future generations as a cultural heritage.
