1709‐46 German naturalist. Born in the Kingdom of Franconia (a duchy on the Main River in Germany). He moved to St. Petersburg at the age of 25, and became an assistant at the Academy of Sciences in 1737. He then went to investigate the Kamchatka Peninsula as part of the Second Kamchatka Expedition, organized by order of Tsar Peter I of Russia, and together with V. Bering, whom he met there, he explored the area from today's Aleut Islands to the coast of Alaska in 1741-42. He returned to Kamchatka in 1742-43 to investigate the native people, flora, and fauna, and died of an illness in Tyumen on the way back to St. Petersburg.
