German naturalist. Born in the Kingdom of Franconia (a duchy on the Main River in Germany). He moved to St. Petersburg at the age of 25, and became an assistant at the Academy of Sciences in 1737. He then went to investigate the Kamchatka Peninsula as part of the Second Kamchatka Expedition, organized by order of Tsar Peter I of Russia, and together with V. Bering, whom he met there, he explored the area from today's Aleut Islands to the coast of Alaska in 1741-42. He returned to Kamchatka in 1742-43 to investigate the native people, flora, and fauna, and died of an illness in Tyumen on the way back to St. Petersburg.

ドイツの博物学者。フランコニア王国(ドイツ，マイン川地方の公爵領)に生まれた。25歳の時にペテルブルグに移り，1737年に科学アカデミーの助手となった。その後，ロシア皇帝ピョートル1世の勅命により組織された第2回カムチャツカ探検隊の一員としてカムチャツカ半島の調査に赴き，そこで出会ったV.ベーリングとともに，41‐42年，今日のアレウト列島からアラスカ沿岸地域を探検した。42‐43年には再度カムチャツカで原住民，動植物などの調査を行い，ペテルブルグへの帰途，チュメニで病死した。
