This is the oldest pottery in Oceania, found in the southwest Pacific Ocean between 1600 BC and AD. The type name comes from the Lapita ruins in New Caledonia. It is said to have been brought by a maritime people who spoke Austronesian languages, and its distribution indicates that they navigated and traded over vast ocean areas.
