...It is eaten grilled with salt, but it is not very tasty, and the catch is not large. A similar species is the eulachon, Thaleichthys pacificus , which is preyed upon by salmon and seals and plays an important role in the food chain in the North Pacific. In its native habitat, it is eaten, and the dried version is burned as a substitute for candles, which is why it is also called the candle fish.
