A type of skin disease. When allergic contact dermatitis occurs repeatedly in the same area, the epidermis thickens, edema and cellular infiltration occur in the dermis, and the skin appears thicker, forming an erythematous plaque with clearly accentuated skin grooves and ridges. This type of skin disease was once called neurodermatitis, perhaps because of the severe itching and the appearance of peripheral nerve involvement. Contact allergens that are likely to cause neurodermatitis include metals such as chromium, nickel, and cobalt, plant components that are exposed professionally (urushiol, alantolactone), and hair dyes and fragrances that are exposed by hairdressers and barbers. When a patch test is performed for the causative allergen, the primary skin rash that had improved temporarily may temporarily worsen. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
