Of the total energy reaching the Earth calculated from the solar constant, only about two-thirds of it reaches the Earth's surface in the form of solar radiation due to absorption by the atmosphere, averaging 0.9 kW per m2 . Of this, about 47% is consumed by long wavelengths from the sea surface, lake surface, and ground, about 20% is consumed in heat transfer to the atmosphere, and only about 0.2% is used for the growth of plants (including plankton) on land and in the sea.
