Samye Temple - Samyeji (English name) bSam yas

Japanese: サムイェー寺 - サムイェーじ（英語表記）bSam yas

The oldest monastery, whose cornerstone was laid in 775 on the north bank of the Tibetan Zangbu River in central Tibet. Two sun and moon halls were placed on either side of the main hall, and three temples were built on each of the four adjacent sides, taking 12 years to complete. In 779, when the main hall was completed, founder Shantarakshita bestowed full ordination on six Tibetans, forming the first Sangha. At the dedication ceremony, King Trisong Detsen had the queen and all the other officials sign a decree of reverence for Buddha, and had the gist of this engraved on a stone tablet. The main hall was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and no longer exists. [Yamaguchi Zuiho]

中央チベット蔵布江北岸に775年に定礎された最古の僧院。本堂の両側に日月2堂を配し，四隣に各3寺を建て，完成に12年を要した。本堂竣工の779年に開山シャーンタラクシタが6人のチベット人に具足戒を授け，最初の僧伽をつくった。落慶法要に当たり，王ティソン･デツェンは王妃以下の百官に崇仏の誓約詔書に署名させ，その趣旨を石碑に刻んで残した。本堂は文化大革命の際に破壊されて残っていない。【山口瑞鳳】
