George Farquhar

British comedy playwright. Born in Ireland. After dropping out of Trinity College, Dublin, he became an actor, but quit after injuring a colleague on stage, and moved to London. He continued to write after the success of his debut work, The Love and the Bottle (1698), and established his literary reputation with The Conscript (1706) and The Stratagem (1707), but died young. Compared to the witty, urbane comedies of manners typified by Congreve, his style was characterized by a rich local color and humanity, and he marked the end of the Restoration period. He is buried in St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church.

イギリスの喜劇作家。アイルランド生まれ。ダブリンのトリニティ・カレッジ中退後俳優となるが、舞台で同僚を傷つけたため廃業、ロンドンに出る。処女作『恋と酒瓶』（1698）の成功をきっかけに創作を続け、『徴兵官』（1706）、『伊達(だて)男の策略』（1707）により文名を確立するが早逝。コングリーブに代表される都会風軽妙洒脱(しゃだつ)な風習喜劇に比べ、地方色豊かでヒューマンな作風を特色とし、王政復古期の最後を飾った。聖マーチン・イン・ザ・フィールズ教会に眠る。
