The yam bean is one of the most well-known edible tropical legumes (illustration). It is a perennial vine resembling kudzu, with a large tuberous root that is eaten raw or cooked. It grows to a diameter of about 40 cm and a weight of 5-15 kg. When cut, the inside is white and rich in starch and sugar. It is very different from many legumes that produce edible beans or legumes. The stems are 2-6 m long. The leaves are alternate and compound with 3 leaflets, with narrow, elongated stipules at the base.

ヤム･ビーンyam beanと呼ばれ，熱帯地方の有名な食用マメ科植物の一つである（イラスト）。一見クズに似た多年生のつる草で，大きな塊根があり，これを生のまま，または料理して食用とする。直径約40cm，重さ5～15kgくらいにまで大きくなり，切ると内部は白色で，デンプンや糖に富む。豆や豆果を食用とするマメ科植物の多くとは，大いに異なっている。茎は長さ2～6m。葉は互生し，3小葉をもつ複葉で，基部に狭長卵形の托葉がある。
