Gregorios Palamas

Around 1296 - 1359
Greek theologian and advocate of Quietism (hesychasmos), probably born in Constantinople. He aspired to monasticism early on, and around 1318 went to Mount Athos, where he became familiar with Quietism. In 26 he was ordained in Thessalonica, and returned to Mount Athos. In 37 he became embroiled in a controversy over Quietism initiated by the Calabrian monk Barlaam, who went beyond theological issues to attack the particular yoga-like practices of the Quietists of Mount Athos.

ギリシアの神学者。静寂主義(ヘシュカスモス)の擁護者。おそらくコンスタンティノープル生れ。早くから修道生活に志し，1318年ころアトス山(アトス)に入り，静寂主義に親しんだ。26年にテッサロニケで聖職につき，再びアトス山に戻った。37年にはカラブリア出身の修道士バルラアムBarlaamが提起した静寂主義論争にまきこまれた。バルラアムは神学上の問題からさらに進んで，アトス山の静寂主義者たちのヨーガに似た特殊な修行方法を攻撃した。
