Himeji [city] - Himeji
A city in the southwest of Hyogo Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. It is located in the mountainous area inland from the center of the Harima Plain, facing the Harima Nada Sea to the south and including the Ieshima Islands offshore. It has long been a key location for land and sea transportation and prospered as a castle town and post town for Himeji Castle (a World Heritage Site). From the Meiji period until World War II, it was a military city, and heavy chemical industries, mainly steel, developed, and it was the center of the western part of the prefecture with its grain-producing region as its backdrop. After the war, it merged with industrial areas such as Shikama and Hirohata, and developed into the core of the Harima Industrial Area, with steel, oil refining, chemicals, and electrical machinery, as well as local industries such as leather and chain manufacturing. In recent years, it has also become a center for advanced technology industries. It has Tegarayama Central Park and Engyo-ji Temple. It is a junction of the Sanyo Main Line and Shinkansen, and the Kishin Line and Bantan Line. It is also connected to the Sanyo Electric Railway and Sanyo Expressway. In March 2006, the towns of Yumesaki and Ieshima in Shikama County, Kodera and Yasutomi in Kanzaki County, and Shisō County were incorporated. The area is 534.47 km2 . The population is 536,270 (2010).

兵庫県南西部の市。1889年市制。播磨(はりま)平野の中央から内陸の山地一帯に位置し,南は播磨灘に臨み,沖合の家島諸島を含む。古くから海陸交通の要地で姫路城(世界遺産)の城下町・宿場町として繁栄。明治以降第2次大戦中までは軍都で,鉄鋼を中心とした重化学工業が発展,穀倉地帯を背景とした県西部の中心であった。戦後は飾磨(しかま),広畑などの工業地帯を合併,鉄鋼・石油精製・化学・電機,地場産業として皮革,鎖製造などをもつ播磨工業地帯の中核として発展。近年は先端技術産業の立地も進む。手柄山中央公園,円教寺などがある。山陽本線・新幹線が通じ姫新(きしん)線,播但線の分岐点。山陽電鉄,山陽自動車道も通じる。2006年3月飾磨郡夢前町,家島町,神崎郡香寺町,宍粟郡安富町を編入。534.47km2。53万6270人(2010)。
