A city in central Egypt and the capital of the prefecture of the same name. Population 208,000 (1992). In ancient Egypt it was called Per-Mema, and its present name comes from the name of a tax commissioner during the reign of Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid. Specialties include sugar cane, grapes, and alabaster.
