An island in the Baltic Sea, separated from the southeast coast of Sweden by the Kalmar Strait. It is connected to the mainland by the Öland Bridge (total length 6,070 m). Its capital is Borgholm. A low-lying island, it is primarily agricultural, producing limestone and alumite. It is home to medieval Viking ruins and is known as a summer resort. The unique rural landscape, including the limestone pavement seen in the southern part of the island, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Area 1,344 km2 .
