A sect of Anabaptists formed in the Netherlands in the 16th century. It originated from the Swiss Brethren, a left-wing faction of Zwingli, but separated from them in 1525 and later moved to the Netherlands, where Menno Simons became its leader. It suffered various persecutions due to the influence of the Peasants' War of T. Müntzer and the Münster Uprising, but has spread throughout Europe and continues to exist to this day. Many of its doctrines are common to Protestant churches, but its distinctive feature is its strict non-resistance policy.
