School myopia - gakkokinshi

This is myopia that begins around the age of entering elementary school and progresses as the body stops growing, around age 25 or 26. When reading or writing for long periods of time, it is important to take breaks (such as by occasionally looking out the window at something far away) and to keep the book at a distance from the eyes. Reading in places with poor lighting should be avoided. Vision tests are very important, and even before school age, do not rely solely on school tests. If you notice anything unusual, see an ophthalmologist. It is also a good idea to check the vision of one eye at a time from time to time to detect any diseases in one eye early.

小学校に入学する年齢くらいから、身体の成長の止まる25、26歳ごろまでに始まり、身体の成長とともに進行する近視をいう。長時間の読書や筆記の際に休息（ときどき窓から外の遠方を見るなど）をとりながら、目と本との距離を保つように心がけることがたいせつであり、採光の不十分な場所での読書は避けるべきであるといわれている。視力検査は非常にたいせつで、就学時以前についても学校の検査のみに頼らず、すこしでもおかしいことに気づいたら、眼科専門医の診察を受ける。また、片方の目の疾患を早期にみつけるために、ときどき片方ずつ見え方を調べたほうがよい。
