Sirius, the alpha star, is the brightest star in the sky, with a magnitude of -1.5 and is an A1 type main sequence star. This star is visible in the winter evening sky, but it rises above the eastern horizon before the sun at dawn at the beginning of summer, and in ancient Egypt it was believed to be the star that heralds the flooding of the Nile River following the rainy season in the Ethiopian highlands. The name Sirius comes from the Greek word seirios (meaning one who burns), and this is why the summer doyo period is called dog days in English.

略号CMa。α星のシリウスは全天第1の輝星で，光度－1.5等，A1型の主系列星である。この星は冬の宵空に見えるが，明け方太陽に先立って東の地平線に昇るのは夏の初めであり，古代エジプトではエチオピア高地の雨季に続くナイル川のはんらんを告げる星として信仰された。シリウスの名はギリシア語のセイリオス(焼きこがすものの意)から由来したもので，夏の土用を英語でドッグデイズdog daysと呼ぶのもこのことによる。
