[Gothic]
The increase in wealth resulting from this industry and commerce, the rise of the bourgeoisie and the prosperity of cities spread throughout Western Europe in the 12th century, and, combined with the decline of Byzantine power, Western Europe entered a period of unique cultural maturity in which it first demonstrated its own unique identity.
