Born: October 3, 1895 in Kharkov
[Died] 1979. French archaeologist born in Budapest, Russia. Studied Assyrian and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Sorbonne and the École de Louvre, Paris. In 1930, he participated in the excavation of Tello (ancient name Lagash) in Iraq, and then moved to Iran, where he excavated Tepegyan (1931-32), Tepesialkh (1933-35, 1937), Susa (1946-67), and Chogha Zanbil (1951-62), achieving great success especially in the field of prehistoric archaeology. During this time, he served as head of the French archaeological survey team in Afghanistan and director of the French Archaeological Institute in Cairo. His main work is Iran, des origines à l'Islam (1950), the ancient culture of Iran.

ロシア生まれのフランスの考古学者。ソルボンヌ大学，パリ大学エコール・ド・ルーブルでアッシリア語，古代オリエント学を学ぶ。 1930年イラクのテッロー (古代名ラガシュ) の発掘に参加，その後イランに移り，テペギヤン (1931～32) ，テペシアルク (1933～35，1937) ，スーサ (1946～67) ，チョガザンビル (1951～62) の発掘を行ない，特に先史考古学の分野で多大の成果をあげた。なおこの間にアフガニスタンのフランス考古学調査団長やカイロのフランス考古学研究所所長を歴任した。主著『イランの古代文化』 Iran，des origines à l'Islam (1950) 。
