An artist known by a monogram. In particular, an artist whose real name is known only by a monogram. A monogram is a name indicated by initials alone or a combination of several letters, and was originally engraved on ancient coins as a guarantee, and in the Middle Ages was used on wax seal rings. The signature as an expression of ownership or copyright was originally related to the artist's awareness of the change in social status from craftsman to artist, and the monogram, which omits the signature, can be seen as a transitional phenomenon. Monogrammers were relatively common among painters and printmakers in Germany and the Netherlands from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
