A title of a position in the Edo Shogunate. One of the magistrates of distant provinces. Also called the Nanto magistrate. In the early 17th century, the gedaishu of Okubo Nagayasu were appointed, and after Nagayasu's downfall, Nakanobo, a monk of Kofuku-ji Temple who had been in charge of the construction and festivals of Kasuga Shrine, was appointed to this post. Under the direction of Kyoto Shoshidai Itakura Katsushige and Konchiin Suden, they were in charge of the civil affairs of Nara and Yamato provinces. Their authority was small, and they sought the directions and judgments of their superiors on most important matters. The Nara magistrate system was established in 1664 (Kanbun 4), and their duties were separated, with the Nara magistrate in charge of general civil affairs and the Nara daikan in charge of the rule of the Yamato Tenryo. Although they were under the control of the Roju, they consulted with the Shoshidai and the Kyoto Town Magistrate on government affairs. Fuyou no Mazume, resident of Nara, 1,000 koku, 1,500 koku salary, 8 yoriki and 30 doshin, capacity of 1 person (2 roles from 1696 to 1702).
