Fundamental Theology - Theologia Fundamentalis

It is a branch of Catholic theology that actively seeks to provide scientific, objective knowledge and proof of the factuality of revelation, and its foundations are based on philosophical and historical methods. Theology as the science of faith (scientia fidei) assumes that the truth of faith is revealed by God and entrusted to the infallible teaching authority of the Church, but fundamental theology, as the so-called fundamental branch of theology, verifies the correctness of such theological assumptions through reason. The seeds of fundamental theology were already found in the apologetics of the early Church (for example, Lactantius, Theodoret, Augustine, etc.), and it saw considerable development in medieval scholasticism represented by Thomas Aquinas, but it was not until the early modern period that it developed into its own academic system, and we had to wait until the works of F. Bellarmine, Bichel, B. Stadtler, and others.

啓示の事実性に対して，科学的客観的認識および証明を積極的に提示しようとするカトリック神学の一部門で，その基礎づけは哲学的歴史的方法によってなされる。信仰の学 scientia fideiとしての神学は信仰の真理が神より啓示され，かつそれが教会の不可謬的教導権にゆだねられていることを前提とするが，基礎神学はこの神学のいわば基礎的部門としてかかる神学上の前提の正しさを理性によって検証するのである。基礎神学の萌芽はすでに初代教会における護教論 (たとえばラクタンチウス，テオドレトス，アウグスチヌスら) のなかに見出され，トマス・アクィナスに代表される中世のスコラ学において相当の発展をみたが，それが固有の学的体系をもつにいたったのは近世に入ってからで，F.ベラルミヌス，ビッヘル，B.シュタットラーらの業績に待たねばならなかった。
