Rana rugosa (Japanese earth frog)

Japanese: ツチガエル(土蛙) - ツチガエル(英語表記)Rana rugosa
Rana rugosa (Japanese earth frog)
A frog of the Ranidae family (illustration), commonly known as the Ibogaeru in Japan. It is distributed throughout Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Yakushima, and the Korean peninsula, and is commonly seen in streams, ponds, rice fields, and slightly dirty ditches, but its dull body color makes it inconspicuous. Males are 3.5-4.5cm long, while females are about 6cm long. There are numerous wart-like protuberances on the back of the body, which form prominent ridges on the limbs. Most of the larvae overwinter, and some can reach a total length of 8cm. The breeding season is from May to August, and the frogs lay about 1,000 eggs at a time on aquatic plants.
