A large herb of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows to a height of about 1 meter, with a triangular stem. A large inflorescence grows at the end of the stem, with dense yellowish brown spikelets. It rarely grows in wetlands in Japan, and is thought to be an introduced plant brought there by migratory birds. It is a perennial plant widely distributed in the tropics, but the Japanese variety has the characteristics of an annual or biennial plant. The Japanese name was given to it after Iwasaki Kan'en, a botanist of the Edo period. In Korea, it is called Wangul (莞草) and is used to make bedding.
