A perennial plant of the ginger family, its aromatic yellow rhizomes are used as a spice (illustration). The plant is small, with one to three leaves spreading above ground from the top of the rhizome that branches underground. The roots partially swell to form bulbs. The leaves have short petioles, are somewhat leathery, broadly elliptical, about 10 cm long and 5 to 9 cm wide, but when there is only one leaf from the rhizome, the width is narrower. A spike containing 4 to 10 severely shortened flowers grows between the leaves. The flowers bloom one or two at a time, have a long flower tube about 3 to 5 cm long, and are almost white with a purple lip.

ショウガ科の多年草で，黄色の根茎には芳香があり，香辛料として利用される（イラスト）。全体は小型で，地下の分枝する根茎の頂部から1～3枚の葉を地表に展開する。根は部分的に肥大し球根になる。葉は短い葉柄があり，やや革質，広楕円形で長さ約10cm，幅5～9cmであるが，根茎から1枚だけのときは幅がより狭くなる。葉間からひどく短縮した4～10花あまりをつけた穂状花序を出す。花は1～2個ずつが開花し，3～5cmほどの長い花筒部があり，ほぼ白色で唇弁は紫色を帯びることがある。
