Calcidius

Japanese: カルキディウス（英語表記）Calcidius

His career is unknown. Researchers have suggested that he dated his work anywhere from the 4th century to the first half of the 5th century. His Latin translation and commentary on the first 52 chapters of Plato's Timaeus are his works. Until the 12th century, when Henrichus Aristippus translated the Meno and Phaidon into Latin, this was the only source of knowledge about Plato in the Western world, and it had a great influence on the cosmology of the Chartres School in the 12th century.

経歴は不詳。年代についても，研究者により4世紀から5世紀前半までの振幅がみられる。プラトンの《ティマイオス》の前半(52章)までのラテン語訳と注解とが彼の著書として伝存。これは，12世紀，ヘンリクス･アリスティップスHenrichus Aristippusによる《メノン》《ファイドン》のラテン語訳があらわれるまで，西方世界におけるほとんど唯一のプラトンに関する知識の源泉としての意義を有し，12世紀のシャルトル学派の宇宙論に多大の影響を及ぼした。
