A type of Imperial Court tribute belonging to the Kuraryo (Curaryo). They are also called Imamiya tribute. They were originally fishermen who lived in Imamiyahama, Settsu (present-day Naniwa Ward, Osaka City), but in the late Heian period they became jinin (shrine attendants) of the Ebisu Shrine Hirotasha (Imamiya Ebisu Shrine) and engaged in buying and selling seafood. In 911, when Imamiyahama was designated as the Imperial Court's kitchen, they became Mizushidokoro tribute attendants. In the early Muromachi period, they became palanquin bearers of Kyoto's Gion Shrine Omiya, and were allowed to sell clams and other products during the Gion Festival, so they were called "Imamiya clam sellers." In 1391, there was a dispute with merchants at Yodo Fish Market over sales rights, and in 1516, there was also a dispute with the Goshu Awazuza, and the Imamiya Shrine priests were given the right to sell fresh produce such as shellfish that could be transported to relatively long distances. Their activities continued until the end of the Sengoku period. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
