Length - zhang-liang; chang-liang

Length - zhang-liang; chang-liang
In China, this refers to the measurement of land area. This was used to expose hidden fields and tax evasion, and to increase tax revenue and make the burden fair. The Northern Song Dynasty's Square Field Equal Tax Law and the Southern Song Dynasty's Business Boundary Law are examples of this, but the first survey to be implemented on a national scale was the survey by Emperor Hongwu at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, which resulted in the creation of a land register called the "Yu Lin Tu Zhao." However, land ownership became confused again after this, so when Zhang Juzheng came to power, he began a nationwide survey in the 8th year of the Wanli era (1580), and achieved great results. However, no large-scale surveys were carried out after that, even during the Qing Dynasty.
