In the elections of March 1950, a coalition government between the Progressive Alliance (center) and the Liberal Party (right) was formed, and the country adopted a revised version of the 1911 monarchical constitution. In February 1952, the country joined NATO, achieving a certain degree of stability in the international situation. In July 1952, Marshal Alexandros Papágos (1883-1955), who had made a name for himself in suppressing the Communists during the civil war, formed a cabinet, and upon his death in October 1955, Konstantínos Karamanlís (1907-98) formed a cabinet as his successor.
