1888‐1969 A pioneering leader in the Thai humanities, he is known in particular as the father of Thai folklore studies. His pen name was Sathiankoset. He based his academic studies on indigenousism and left behind a vast record of human observations. His representative works include Old Thai Customs (1956), The Life of Thai People in the Past (1957), A Collection of Thai Folklore (1962-65, translated into Japanese as A Journal of the Life of the Thai People), and Memoirs (1967-70, translated into Japanese as Memoirs of Thailand, Memoirs of a Life). He overcame the disadvantages of being of commoner origin and having a low educational background (only completing four years of secondary school) to hold many important positions, including Director General of the Fine Arts Bureau and President of the Siamese Society, and to reach the highest ranks in Thai academia.
