Black

Complete black is said to be the complete absence of light, but in this state you cannot sense anything. In reality, you can say that what you see as black is what uniformly reflects the faint light. Black gives the impression of being blurred, dark, heavy, gloomy, and somewhat static. It also has a rather masculine and clear feel. Black is often associated with things that are black, such as tires, morning coats, and black hair. In abstract terms, it is associated with things that are easily associated with darkness, such as anxiety, death, eeriness, gloom, and loneliness. It is also easily associated with sin and fear.

The preference for black is relatively high among adults. On the other hand, it is often pointed out as a disliked color among children. Although the association with black does not seem to be very pleasant, the impression changes when it is actually used on clothing and other items. When it comes to three-dimensional objects or objects that have movement, black appears to change subtly depending on the lighting conditions. For this reason, when actually used, it is perceived as a color with nuance. Black, along with white, is considered a representative achromatic color, but since the human eye is sensitive to changes in brightness on the dark side, even slight differences in the reflection of light cause black to change subtly. Therefore, it often gives a chic feel.

Black also creates a sense of weightiness. This corresponds to it being the color with the lowest brightness. Because the associations and symbols that black represents are similar to what we feel from darkness, it is also used to express things like doing things in the shadows, without coming out into the open. Examples of this are the words kuro-maku (black curtain) and kurogo (black robe). Other examples include using both black and white to clearly distinguish between black and white. One of the characteristics of black is that the image of black itself is quite different from how it is actually used.

まったく光のない状態が完全な黒であるとされているが、この状態ではなにも感じられない。実際には、わずかの光を一様に反射するものを黒として見ているといってよい。黒は、じみで、暗く、重々しい、沈んだ、やや静的といった印象がもたれる。また、どちらかといえば男性的で、はっきりした感じをもつ。黒からの連想は、タイヤ、モーニング、黒髪など、黒色であるものが多い。また、抽象的なものとしては、不安、死、不気味、陰気、孤独といったように、暗闇(くらやみ)などと結び付きやすいものが連想されている。罪、恐怖などといったものとも結び付きやすい。

　黒に対しての好みは、成人においては比較的高い。一方、子供の場合には、嫌いな色としてよく指摘されている。黒の連想はあまり快適なものではないようであるが、実際に服などに使用するとその印象が変わってくる。立体的なもの、動きが入るもので黒の場合には、光の状況により微妙に変化して見える。このため実際に使用すると、ニュアンスのある色として感じられる。黒は白とともに無彩色の代表とも考えられるが、人間の目が、暗いほうの明るさの変化に敏感であるため、わずかな光の反射の違いが、黒を微妙に変化させる。したがって、シックな感じをもたせることが往々にしてある。

　黒はまた重厚感を生じさせる。これは、色彩のなかでもっとも明度が低いことに対応している。黒は連想、象徴されるものが、暗闇などから感じるものと類似しているため、表に出ないで、陰でいろいろなことをする場合などの表現としても使われている。黒幕、黒衣(くろご)ということばなどその例であろう。ほかに、黒と白の両方を使い、黒白をはっきりさせるなどともいう。黒そのもののイメージと、実際に用いられたときがかなり異なるのも黒の特色であろう。
