936‐983 Amir of the Buyid dynasty. Reigned 949-983. His name was a title bestowed by the caliph, meaning "helper of the dynasty." He ruled Iraq, Fars, and Kirman, and brought the dynasty to its peak. He advocated the Twelver Imam sect, and was the first in the Islamic world to call himself Shahanshah (King of Kings). He had coins minted in Pahlavi, a Middle Persian language, and emphasized his connection with the Iranian traditions dating back to the Sassanid dynasty.
