Japanese: 仲買 - なかがい

A merchant or a type of business activity in the Edo period. It refers to a person or business activity that acts as an intermediary between producers or shippers and wholesalers, or between wholesalers and retailers, and conducts business in his or her own name. In the Muromachi period, such middlemen in buying and selling were called suai, but in the Edo period, middlemen in small transactions between middlemen and wholesalers, or between wholesalers and retailers, were called suai and were distinguished from middlemen. Middlemen formed stock associations and had monopoly organizations, and toward the end of the Edo period, some of them began to buy and sell goods independently, making the distinction between them and wholesalers unclear. This word is also another name for smuggling.

江戸時代の商人，または商行為の一つ。生産者または荷主と問屋，問屋と小売人の中間に介在し，自己の名において商取引をする者，またはその商行為をいう。このような売買の仲介者を室町時代には牙僧 (すあい) といったが，江戸時代には，仲買と問屋，問屋と小売人の間の小取引の仲介者を牙僧といい仲買と区別した。仲買は株仲間をつくって独占的組織をもち，江戸時代末期には，商品の購入，販売を独自で行うものも現れ，問屋との区別が不明確となった。別に抜け荷の別称にこの語がある。
