Oyama [city] - Oyama
A city at the southern tip of Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the alluvial plain of the Watarase River tributaries, such as the Omoi River and the Uzuma River. The city center flourished as a post town on the Nikko Kaido road, a market town, and a river port on the Omoi River. Since the Meiji era, it has been a key transportation hub where the Tohoku Main Line, Ryomo Line, and Mito Line intersect, and in 1982 the Tohoku Shinkansen opened. Blessed with convenient transportation, electricity, and water, in addition to the traditional brewing, woodworking, and flour milling industries, in recent years the development of industrial parks has progressed, and the shipment value of manufactured goods, mainly from the machinery, auto parts, and metal industries, reached 597.4 billion yen (2003), making it the fifth largest industrial city in the prefecture. Rural areas are covered with extensive rice paddies, and mulberry seedlings are cultivated, livestock are raised, and Yuki tsumugi silk is produced. The KDDI Oyama International Communications Center is located here. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 171.76 km 2 . 164,454 people (2010).

栃木県南端の市。1954年市制。思川,巴波(うずま)川など渡良瀬川支流の沖積平野を占める。中心市街は日光街道の宿場町,市場町,思川の河港として栄え,明治以降は東北本線,両毛線,水戸線の交差する交通の要衝となり,1982年東北新幹線が通じた。交通の便と電力,水に恵まれて在来の醸造,木工,製粉のほか,近年は工業団地の造成が進み,機械・自動車部品・金属工業を中心に製造品出荷額で5974億円(2003)を上げ,県内5位の工業都市となっている。農村部は水田が広く,桑苗栽培,畜産,結城紬(ゆうきつむぎ)生産が行われる。KDDI小山国際通信センターがある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。171.76km2。16万4454人(2010)。
