Petition to Kofukuji Temple

Japanese: 興福寺奏状 - こうふくじそうじょう

This petition was submitted in October 1205 (Genkyu 2) by the monk Soko Daihoshi of Kofuku-ji Temple and others, criticizing Honen's exclusive practice of nembutsu. The actual drafter was Jokei, who was known as a great scholar in Nara. Starting with "The mistake of establishing a new sect," it criticizes Honen's doctrine in nine articles, and from the standpoint of orthodoxy that the eight exoteric and esoteric schools should coexist under the harmony of the royal law and Buddhist law, it rejects Honen's exclusive practice as a heresy that disrupts the land.
