Nikolai Andreevich Rimskii-Korsakov

Russian composer. He was a member of the Russian national school, but also taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory for many years, contributing to the establishment of academic Russian music. He was of noble birth and a naval officer. In 1861 he met Balakirev and others and joined their group, and in 1871 he began teaching at the Conservatory and became a professional musician. In the 1870s he composed early nationalistic operas such as The Girl from Pskov, May Night, and The Snow Maiden (1881). In the 1880s he gained the support of Belyaev, who was known for his music publishing business, and came to be a leader in the Russian music world.

ロシアの作曲家。ロシア国民楽派の一人であるが，長くペテルブルグ音楽院で教鞭をとり，ロシア音楽のアカデミズムの確立に貢献した。貴族の出身で海軍士官。1861年バラキレフらと知り合ってそのグループに入り，71年以降音楽院の教職に就き，職業音楽家の道に入った。70年代には民族主義的な初期のオペラ《プスコフの娘》《5月の夜》，そして《雪娘》(1881)などを作曲。80年代には音楽出版業で知られるベリャーエフの支持を得て，ロシア音楽界を指導する立場に立った。
