An Indian monk who lived about 100 years after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha. He is the founder of the Mahasanghika sect. He proposed a new theory consisting of five articles, which led to the division of the Buddhist sect, which had been united until then, into two factions, the conservative (→ Theravada) and the progressive (→ Mahasanghika).
