Jayapura - Jajapura (English spelling)

A port city on the north coast of West Irian (western New Guinea), Indonesia. Capital of Papua Province (formerly Irian Jaya Province). Population 192,791 (2005). With an excellent port facing Humboldt Bay, it was called Hollandia during the Dutch colonial period, and when West Irian was annexed to Indonesia, it was renamed Sukarnapura, and in 1969 it was renamed Jayapura. It is the political and economic center of the region, and is relatively open in West Irian, with coconut palms being cultivated in the surrounding area. It was one of the fiercest battlefields between Japan and the United States during World War II.

インドネシア、西イリアン（ニューギニア島西部）北岸の港湾都市。パプア州（旧イリアン・ジャヤ州）の州都。人口19万2791（2005）。フンボルト湾に臨む良港で、オランダ領時代はホランディアHollandiaとよばれ、西イリアンのインドネシア帰属とともにスカルナープラSukarnapura、さらに1969年にはジャヤプラと改称された。地方の政治、経済の中心地で、西イリアンでは比較的よく開けており、付近ではココヤシの栽培が行われる。第二次世界大戦での日米の激戦地の一つである。
