A port city on the north coast of West Irian (western New Guinea), Indonesia. Capital of Papua Province (formerly Irian Jaya Province). Population 192,791 (2005). With an excellent port facing Humboldt Bay, it was called Hollandia during the Dutch colonial period, and when West Irian was annexed to Indonesia, it was renamed Sukarnapura, and in 1969 it was renamed Jayapura. It is the political and economic center of the region, and is relatively open in West Irian, with coconut palms being cultivated in the surrounding area. It was one of the fiercest battlefields between Japan and the United States during World War II.
