Isobutyric acid

An aliphatic carboxylic acid, an isomer of butyric acid. Also known as dimethylacetate. A colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor, it is poorly soluble in water, but is highly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and ether. In the laboratory, it can be obtained by oxidizing isobutyl alcohol with potassium permanganate in an alkaline environment.

It occurs naturally in the form of free or esters in carob and arnica root. Many esters have an aromatic smell and occur naturally as components of essential oils.

脂肪族カルボン酸の一つで、酪酸の異性体。別名ジメチル酢酸。不快なにおいをもつ無色の液体で、水には難溶であるが、エタノール（エチルアルコール）、エーテルなどの有機溶媒にはよく溶ける。実験室的には、イソブチルアルコールをアルカリ性で過マンガン酸カリウムにより酸化すると得られる。

　天然にはイナゴマメやアルニカの根に遊離またはエステルとして存在する。エステルには芳香のあるものが多く、天然に精油の成分として存在する。
