An aliphatic carboxylic acid, an isomer of butyric acid. Also known as dimethylacetate. A colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor, it is poorly soluble in water, but is highly soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and ether. In the laboratory, it can be obtained by oxidizing isobutyl alcohol with potassium permanganate in an alkaline environment. It occurs naturally in the form of free or esters in carob and arnica root. Many esters have an aromatic smell and occur naturally as components of essential oils.
