In ancient Egypt, he is a god represented by a golden wolf or a human body with this head, and is generally considered to be the god of the dead or the god of cemeteries. In myth, he is the son of Osiris and Nepthys, and is said to have swallowed Osiris. In the Book of the Dead, he is called Ip-u-wat (the one who opens the way) and is considered to lead the dead to Osiris. In the story of Two Brothers, written around 1200 BC (late 19th dynasty), the older brother's name is Anubis (Anup in the original language) and is given a symbol representing a god, so this story may have originally been about the conflict between the younger brother Bata, a local god, and the god Anubis.

古代エジプトで金狼犬あるいはこの首をもつ人体で表される神で、一般に死者の神、あるいは墓地の神とみなされる。神話ではオシリスとネフティスの子で、オシリスをのみ込んだといわれている。『死者の書』ではイプ・ウワト（道を開く者）とよばれ、死者をオシリスの前に導くものとみなされる。また、紀元前1200年ごろ（第19王朝末期）に書かれた『二人兄弟』の物語では兄の名がアヌビス（原語でアヌプ）であり、神を表す記号がつけられているので、この物語は本来、地方神である弟バタとアヌビス神の争いを主題とするものであったかもしれない。
